VOICES ORGANIZED IN CIVIC ENGAGEMENT – Opportunities in Central Oklahoma

Communication from Kris King, Lead Organizer of Voices Organized in Civic Engagement (VOICE) provided a list of upcoming opportunities for civic engagement in central Oklahoma. The Human Community Network encourages you to find ways to engage these important gatherings and events in the months ahead:

· Run-off Election – Aug. 28th

· Clergy caucus – Aug. 30th

· Leaders’ Meeting – Sept. 6th

· Accountability session with candidates for governor and state superintendent – Sept. 30th

· VOICE Gala – Oct. 19th

· Accountability session with candidates for insurance commissioner – Oct. 23rd

· Souls to the Polls – Nov. 3rd

· Election Day – Nov. 6th

Run-Off Election, August 28th

Don’t forget to vote! If you don’t know anything about the candidates in a specific race, it’s o.k. to skip that one (or two or three….), but do vote! Remind your friends! Make a bulleting announcement! Show us your “I voted” sticker all over social media! Early voting takes place on these dates/times:

· August 23, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

· August 24, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

· August 25, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the run-off is August 22. Don’t forget to vote!

Clergy Caucus, Aug. 30th

We’ll have a clergy caucus meeting on Thursday, Aug. 30th, to check in after the summer and talk about the results of the run-off election. We meet 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Location TBA.

Leaders’ Meeting, Sept. 6th

This will be a combination meeting: evaluate the run-off elections AND check in on how sign-ups are going for the accountability session. Big meeting! Be there. We meet at 6:30 p.m. Location TBA

Accountability Session with Governor/State Superintendent of Education candidates – Sept. 30

Our accountability session with candidates for Governor/State Superintendent of Education will be on Sunday, Sept. 30th, 3 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. We are committed to having 1,000 people there, so please get it onto your calendar and the calendar of all your friends. All of them! Rehearsals for the event are:

· Tuesday, Sept. 25th, 7 p.m.

· Saturday, Sept. 29th, 10 a.m. – noon

VOICE Gala, Oct. 19th

We have a very fun evening shaping up – with Gov. David Walters as our Master of Ceremonies, and David Blatt as our honoree for Lifetime Civic Engagement, it’s going to be incredible! Tickets will be going on sale soon at our web site – – and you can support our work by buying a ticket or a table, and/or donating an item to our silent auction. If you have a silent auction item to donate, send an email to Jennifer Hernandez at Please note that we have a new location for our event this year: The Montellano Center, 11200 N Eastern Ave. Best of all, you can wear a costume or mask and be eligible to win prizes!

Accountability Session with Candidates for Insurance Commissioner – Oct. 23rd

The insurance commissioner puts in place the rules for implementation and administration of insurance AND has jurisdiction over all insurance complaints. Who knew? Location TBA

Souls to the Polls – Nov. 3rd

March from Greater Mt Olive Baptist Church to the County Election Board on Saturday, Nov. 3rd. Time and details TBA, but it should be a morning activity.

Election Day – Nov. 6th
